Flipped Classroom Approach

What is a flipped classroom?
Wikipedia defines a flipped classroom as:
An instructional strategy and a type of blended learning, which aims to increase learner  engagement and learning by having students complete readings at their homes and work on live problem-solving during class time.
How does that translate to virtual training?  How does it apply to the training I do?  Do customers care about how effective training is?
I was introduced to the flipped classroom approach as a member of the adjunct faculty at IUPUI.  I  developed an Agile course using the flipped approach.  The reading was completed outside of class. Class time was spent working as teams on a projects.

Over time, we have built and  delivered a one-day Scrum class for years that has adopted the incorporated the flipped classroom approach.  The outcomes have been good. We’re able to reduce cost, minimize time out of office, and improved engagement.
What does a flipped classroom look like? 
Prior to coming to a workshop, a student will review videos, blog posts, and activities which provides a good start.  The in-person workshop consists of activities and discussions that reinforces the reading.  This creates a baseline for the students while covering the basics that would normally be taught in the beginning of the course. 
Traditionally, training has consisted of the instructor disseminating information during the course.  Individual lessons typically focused on an explanation of the content in a lecture style.  
In the traditional model, students engagement is limited to activities where the student works independently.  Any discussions are typically instructor centric with the instructor controlling the flow of the conversation.  Instructors often respond to questions by providing guidance and feedback.
Typically, this pattern of teaching also involves giving students the task of reading from a textbook or practicing a concept by working on a problem set, for example, on their own.  

The flipped classroom shifts the instruction to a learner-centered model.  Instead of a lecture, the classroom is used to create learning opportunities while students are introduced to new topics outside of the workshop.

Methods include instructor-prepared videos, online discussions, research on the internet, and text are the primary delivery mechanisms.  The general rule of thumb is that each lesson should be somewhere between eight and twelve minutes.

Flipped classrooms redefine in-class activities. In-class lessons accompanying flipped classrooms may include activity learning or more traditional homework problems, among other practices, to engage learners in the content. Activities vary but may include: group discussions, working in teams, individual activities, and project-based learning.  This types of active learning allows for highly differentiated instruction, more time can be spent in the workshop and in higher-order thinking skills such as problem identification, collaboration, design and problem-solving as learners tackle difficult problems, work in groups, research, and construct knowledge with the help of their instructor and peers.

An instructor’s interaction with learners in a flipped classroom can be more personalized and less didactic, and learners are actively involved in knowledge acquisition and construction as they participate in and evaluate their learning.

Stories are incredibly powerful. They engage, entertain, and show the listener how your products and services can make a positive change in their life. Storyselling involves using your storytelling skills to sell. Here are 5 highly effective story types you can use for storyselling that will convert. 

 

Your Brand Story

Your brand story is the story of how your business and its unique offerings makes the world a better place. It focuses on the problems your intended audience faces and the solution: your product or service. 

 

The goal of this type of story is to create an image in the reader’s mind of your brand. It helps to drive home what you do differently than others and how you offer value.

 

Preaching Your Values

A great type of story is one that conveys your values. It might describe how you came to develop your values and what you discovered along the way as you ran your business. These stories describe what you stand for.

 

Every company website has a page that describes their mission. Often, they use fluffy words that don’t seem to mean anything. Your story here will show in concrete terms what your business stands for and what change you aspire to make in the world.

 

Your Backstory

Another story you can tell is your backstory. This kind of story talks about the origin of your business. It explains why you started it and what inspired you. It might focus on a problem you faced and how you invented a solution. You can talk about the emotions you experienced when you first saw customers solving a problem using your product or service.

 

Before and After

Before and after stories are great for demonstrating the improvements your offering can make in someone’s life. It starts off with someone in a bad situation or facing a big problem. Then, it contrasts their life afterward, after they’ve used your product and solved their problem. 

 

Customer Testimonials

Customer testimonials are great stories you can use for your marketing because they feature someone else explaining how your products or services helped them. This is easy for your audience to relate to. They see themselves in the customer. 

 

Your customer testimonials should be authentic to have the greatest impact. Ask your best customers to provide a testimonial — if their life has truly been changed for the better by your offering, they’ll be happy to do it. If someone writes a positive review for you online, ask if you can use it as a testimonial. This is “social proof” content that demonstrates the results you’ve succeeded in getting for others.

 

Put Your Customer in the Main Role

No matter what kind of stories you tell, they should all feature the customer as the main character. Know your audience well and make them the hero of your story. This will make it more relatable and paint a picture of what will happen for them if they use your product.

5 Tips for Using Storyselling to Increase Sales

Storytelling is an art form and, like any art, it takes some work and creativity. But it’s not nearly as much work as you might think. Stories are everywhere. Your job is to know your audience and your product and to tell the right story that will get them to buy. This is the principle behind storyselling.

 

Here are 5 tips for telling the right stories that will lead your audience to buy.

 

1.  Know Your Audience

Whether you’re writing a science fiction novel or a product sales page, you need to know exactly who you’re writing for. Spend some time before you even start brainstorming plots to get to know your customer.

 

Learn about your customer’s demographics and psychographics. Pay especially close attention to the emotional lives of your audience members. Find out what problems they’re facing and searching for solutions to.

 

Follow your audience members online and see what topics they talk about, people they follow, and products they buy. Create a detailed profile so you know who to write for.

 

2.  Use the Hero’s Journey

One template has been used for stories since the dawn of civilization: the hero’s journey.

Somewhere in their ordinary life, the hero faces a challenge. They must go on an adventure to overcome it. Along the way, they engage in battle with monsters and villains. The conflict is resolved, and the story ends.

 

Adapt this model to the issue your customer is facing. Show them how using your product or service will help them vanquish their enemies and return their story to peace.

 

3.  Learn from the Masters

Do you know of any great stories? Think about your favorite books or movies, or a brand you love. What is it about the story that keeps you engaged? 

 

Scour the Internet for brand and marketing stories you can use for inspiration. Find storytellers who are good at what they do and try to figure out why. Remember that a story can be anywhere: the news, a blog post, an episode of a TV show, a YouTube video, or a story casually told by a friend. Any of these could give you an excellent idea for storyselling.

 

4.  Be Authentic

Stories only work when they’re authentic. Spinning yarns and tall tales won’t do. You need your audience to feel connected to you through your story. One purpose of storyselling is to build a trusting relationship. 

 

Your stories should be personal and authentic. Don’t be afraid to show your vulnerable side and discuss your challenges or failures. This makes you more human, which makes an even better story.

 

5.  Connect Your Story to a Goal

You have your audience’s attention. They’re in the palm of your hand. The story resolves and … then what? You should have a solid plan for where your story fits into your business and what you want the person to do next. At the end, give them a strong call-to-action telling them what they need to do.
